AIM YP MEMBER MENTORING OPPORTUNITY AT LAWRENCEBURG HS

Part of our mission with AIM YP is to mentor area youth. Hence the “M” in AIM. It stands for “Mentor.”

Lawrenceburg High School has given us a great opportunity to play a small role in guiding their students to become Dearborn County’s productive citizens of the future. Shawn Lightner at the school has invited area professionals to be a brief guest speaker for students on a number of dates in May: 3, 8, 10, 15, 17, 21, and 24. The best days are Wednesdays and Fridays from 12:30-1:30 p.m.

If you can’t make it to the school on those dates, Lawrenceburg High School students are also in need of local job shadowing opportunities. A student job shadow can last an entire day or just a couple hours.

Interested in either of these prospects? E-mail Shawn Lightner at slightner@lburg.k12.in.us and tell him you were referred by AIM YP. Background checks are necessary.

Both programs are focused on the 40 Developmental assets explained in this document (PDF). Before you speak or meet with students be sure to look it over and refer to some these assets and how they are important to you.

We hope these mentoring opportunities are the first of many at Dearborn County’s three high schools: Lawrenceburg, South Dearborn and East Central. Representatives of the schools are welcome to contact us if there is a program AIM YP can assist them with.
